Before you take a peak.....

You need to be aware this is our old blog. Dave (the blogger) started blogging when, as a family, we went to India for 3.5 months from April - August 2008. This blog is the story of our time there. You'll find lots about our story by going to the 'archives' section of the blog to the left below.

My designs are not the only designs to hit the news

Just as I was about to get to bed tonight I had a quick look at the BBC website only to find that someone else's designs have hit the headlines!

Have a look here to hear about Primark having fired three Indian suppliers after a BBC investigation found children as young as nine making clothes for them. One of the factories is right here in Bangalore. The Panorama special on Primark will be broadcast on BBC1 at 9pm on 23 June.
Posing as industry buyers in India, the programme's reporter and his team find some of India's poorest people working long, gruelling hours on Primark clothes in slum workshops and refugee camps far away from the Primark approved and inspected factories; breaking promises on child labour, working hours and wages

What struck me was what sits behind this story....Primark firing 3 Indian suppliers....
So let me make two rants to Primark before I hit the sack!

1. If you charge the prices you do you have to get the clothes cheap somewhere?? Don't tell me you don't know that your clothes are being made in places where conditions are not tip top please! Or is the statement really true on your website that:
"Primark’s prices are low because we don’t overcharge our customers"!!!!!

2. It's all very well to 'do the right thing' and saying 'we will not support these businesses any more' and fire those businesses but behind those businesses are people - real people - some of whom, as the Panorama programme found are just 9 years old! I assume you will be helping these people who don't have any job with their future employment opportunities now Primark???? After all fair trade is not just some trendy badge to wear these days is it??!

There - rant over. I'm off to bed!!
More on this story on the War on Want website here and the somewhat patronising, self righteous statement from Primark here.
Can you spot any word on what will happen to the workers.....??
